How EV Charging Time & Curves Work

Linear Phase (0% to 80%)

During the initial Constant Current (CC) phase, the EV absorbs power at the maximum negotiated rate:

Time (Hours) = Energy (kWh) ÷ (Effective kW × Efficiency)

A 50kW DC charger feeding a 40.5 kWh battery from 10% to 80% transfers ~28.3 kWh in approx 40 minutes.

Tapering Phase (80% to 100%)

Once the battery pack hits 80% State of Charge, the BMS reduces current to protect battery cells.

Power Drops to ~35% of peak (7kW to 15kW)

Charging the remaining 20% (80% to 100%) can often take almost as long as going from 10% to 80%.
